DOMA is History! Marriage Equality is Our Future!

June 26, 2013

To Our BRC Supporters,

What a tremendous day of ch-ch-ch-ch-change!

Today, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, and the federal government must treat the marriages of same-sex couples the same as other marriages for purposes of federal programs and benefits. There are now 13 states and the District of Columbia where there is marriage equality -- that’s 30% of the U.S. population automatically affected by this decision!

The Court also ruled that California’s Proposition 8 that stripped the freedom to marry from same-sex couples in that state is invalid. Same-sex couples will again be able to marry in California!

This is not the end of the marriage equality struggle, nor is marriage the end-all and be-all of the LGBT movement…at least not any movement we want to be a part of.

This is a tremendous achievement for the marriage equality movement and for all of the married LGBT Americans to have their federal rights extended in this way! We also want to draw special attention to the bi same-sex couples and bi people who are married to gay and lesbian spouses who are also celebrating today. Too often you are left off the recognition list but we know you have been fighting for this alongside all of the rest of the community. We salute you and your families!

We should celebrate this tremendous victory today, but tomorrow and beyond there are more campaigns to launch, more votes to cast, and more history to make!
